Yum - Inn of Khong
Inn of Kong

Hamstrung is not a word I use often, but that is how I would have described our situation on Saturday night. We have not been out for dinner in a while and felt like it would be fun, but there was our daughter to consider. Do we risk heading out somewhere only to call a code-red and leave on account of a grumpy toddler? Take away it is then... we have been burnt more than once.

There are many Chinese options in Ballarat. Our pick, drawn originally by the $7.50 lunch packs, is Inn of Khong on Main Road. We multitasked - one heading down to procure dinner and a movie while the other put the baby to bed. For those looking to eat in, the restaurant is adorned with Chinese decorations giving your eyes an exotic feast while you eat. The furniture is not as elegant, but this is not a deal breaker for us. While we have never dined in we have always found the staff to be friendly and take away service fast.

We ordered Szechuan Chicken, Combination Satay, and a Special Fried Rice to share. The rice is never gluggy or short on pork, prawns, or flavour. It is fantastic eaten on its own or mixed through your meal. The Szechuan Chicken is a battered affair with a sticky sauce permeating the dish. It is not too hot for most and comes with my favourite vegies like snow peas, onion, and grated carrot. The Combination Satay is chicken, pork, prawns, and vegies served in a satay sauce. There are liberal amounts of the stars of the show with plenty of big prawns floating around. The sauce is not the satay you find in Thai restaurants, being less peanutty and a little sweeter at Khong. Other tried and true dishes are the Spicy Thai Chicken, and Beef and Tomato.

Sometimes dinner out is nice. The alternative of having the same meal at home, watching a movie, followed by some chocolate under a blanket on the couch is just as satisfying - especially with some nice Chinese.
